Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-surgical hair loss treatment completed over several carefully planned visits. At Sharp SMP Birmingham, we build your hair tattoo in layers so it heals true-to-tone, looks natural in every light, and lasts. Here’s exactly what to expect—appointment by appointment.
⸻
The Typical Timeline (at a glance)
• Consultation (free): assessment, design chat, medical screening, quote.
• Session 1 – Foundation: hairline design + laying down a light layer of SMP to see how it heals.
• Session 2 – Density & Blending: build density and even coverage.
• Session 3 – Detail & Finish: texture, micro-variations, final polish.
Most clients need 2–3 sessions plus the optional refinement.
⸻
Before You Start: Consultation & Prep
• Design & goals: We talk about a hairline that suits your face shape (soft, natural, or sharper—your choice).
• Medical screening: We’ll discuss allergies, medications, and any skin conditions.
• Knowledge: We talk you through everything that happens from start to finish of the Scalp Micropigmentation proceds
Prep tips:
• Keep the scalp clean and moisturised the week before. Exfoliate to get rid of any dry skin.
• Avoid sunbeds/sunburn and heavy exfoliants/retinoids.
• Limit caffeine on session day; eat normally and hydrate.
⸻
Session 1 — Foundation & Hairline Design
Goal: Establish your design and lay the first, lighter layer of density.
What happens
• Pre-session photos and final hairline mapping (we’ll show you from multiple angles).
• Pigment test points to confirm the tone on your skin.
• A light, even pass across your treatment area to set the base.
• We blend into any existing hair for a seamless transition.
Comfort
Most clients call it a 2–4/10 (scratchy/tingly). Numbing is available if needed.
Aftercare (Days 0–4 essentials)
Keep it dry, hands-off, and out of the sun/steam. No gym or swimming yet.
(See our full SMP Aftercare guide for a day-by-day plan.)
⸻
Session 2 — Density & Blending (2–4 hours)
Goal: Build realism, fill any light zones, and feather the edges.
What happens
• We review healing and photos from Session 1.
• Density pass to create the look of compact, natural follicles.
• Advanced blending through the sides/back so it’s invisible in daylight.
• Minor colour/size variation to avoid a “flat” look.
Comfort
Familiar, often easier than Session 1. Short breaks anytime.
Aftercare (Days 5–10 focus)
Gentle lukewarm washing, light moisturising, still keeping sweat and sun low.
⸻
Session 3 — Detail, Texture & Finish
Goal: Micro-variations and edge work for realism at every distance.
What happens
• Micro-texture and spacing adjustments (“salt-and-pepper” variation).
• Hairline refinement (soft, broken, or sharper—your preference).
• Final balance check under different lighting.
Aftercare (Days 11–30 focus)
Normal showers, SPF 30+ when healed, and a gradual return to full training.
⸻
What to Bring & Wear
• Clean, breathable cap (optional) for the journey home.
• Headphones if music/podcasts help you relax.
• A freshly shaved or trimmed scalp if that’s your chosen style (we’ll advise timing).
⸻
Results Timeline (Realistic Expectations)
• Immediate: looks sharper/darker on day one (that’s normal).
• Week 1: mild flaking/softening as micro-wounds close.
• Week 2–3: colour settles, dots tighten visually.
• After Session 3: finished look—natural density that holds up in HD photos and bright daylight.
⸻
Special Cases We Handle
• Transplant scars (FUE/FUT): extra blending passes and careful tonal matching.
• Diffuse thinning & women’s SMP: density work between existing hair with softer edges.
• Old or migrated SMP: correction strategy may add a session or include laser referrals.
⸻
Comfort & Safety, Always
• Calm pacing, micro-breaks, and optional topical numbing.
• Hygienic technique, correct depth, and pigment choice for true-to-tone healing.
• You can pause at any point—no heroics required.

FAQs
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients: 2–3 plus an optional refinement. Scars/corrections may need more.
How long between sessions?
Typically 7–14 days, depending on skin response and schedule.
Does it hurt?
Usually mild to moderate (2–4/10). We can use numbing if you’re sensitive.
Can I work out during the process?
Avoid heavy sweat for 7–10 days after each session; then return gradually.
Will my Scalp Micropigmentation fade?
All SMP softens slowly over time. With SPF and sensible aftercare, on average our clients get a top up every 4-5 years.
